Frequently asked questions

Common questions about Hong Kong gold prices, units and trading.

How many grams is one tael of gold in Hong Kong?

Hong Kong uses the troy tael: 1 tael = 37.429 grams, 1 tael = 10 mace, and 1 mace ≈ 3.74 g. This differs from the mainland market catty. All "tael" figures here use 37.429 g.

Which price do I pay when buying — bid or ask?

The shop's ask is what you pay to buy (higher, with labour premium); the shop's bid is what you receive when selling (lower). Both are shown here as reference prices.

Are these live dealing prices?

No. All gold, purity, world and shop prices here are reference prices / estimates converted or derived from public APIs (gold-api.com, frankfurter.app, CoinGecko, Yahoo Finance), may be delayed, and are not actual dealing prices.

Are pure gold, 999 and 24K the same?

999.9 (fine gold) is 99.99% pure, used for bars and pellets; 999 (24K) is 99%+, used for traditional jewellery; 22K (916) ≈ 91.6%, 18K (750) 75%, 14K (585) 58.5%. Higher purity means more gold; this site converts by purity in real time.
