How to use the gold calculator
This calculator converts any weight of gold into HKD at each major shop's bid / ask reference price in real time. Whether you want to estimate the value of jewellery you hold, plan to buy a gold bar, or compare which shop pays best when selling, you get an answer in seconds.
Steps
- Pick a shop (Luk Fook, Yue Gong Ao Chow Sang Sang, Emperor, Chow Tai Fook, Chow Sang Sang, gold bar/pellet).
- Enter a weight (e.g. 1, 5, 37.4).
- Pick a unit: gram, tael, mace or troy oz.
- Pick a product / purity (999.9 to 9K).
- See "buy (you pay)" and "sell (you get)" reference prices instantly, plus an all-shops comparison and weight conversion.
How it is calculated
The per-tael quote is derived from international spot (XAU/USD) ÷ 31.1035 × 37.429 × USD-HKD rate, then adjusted by each shop's typical premium / buy-back discount.
International gold comes from gold-api.com and the USD-HKD rate from frankfurter.app, updated about every 60 seconds. Shop prices move with spot and are micro-adjusted by date, and are not any shop's official quote.
Hong Kong gold weight unit conversion
| Unit | Equals grams | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 1 troy ounce (oz) | 31.1035 g | International quote unit |

| 1 mace | 3.7429 g | 1 tael = 10 mace |
| 1 candareen | 0.374 g | 1 mace = 10 candareens |
| 1 gram | 1 g | International standard |
Buying vs selling — which price?
- Buying (you pay) = the shop's ask price, higher, including labour premium.
- Selling (you get) = the shop's bid price, lower. Before selling, use "all-shops comparison" and pick the highest bid.
