How to use the gold calculator

Original content · last updated 2026

This calculator converts gold weight and purity into an international spot reference value. It helps estimate intrinsic gold value before you separately confirm a shop's labour charge, premium, buy-back quote and deductions.

Steps

  1. Enter a weight (e.g. 1, 5, 37.4).
  2. Pick a unit: gram, tael, mace or troy oz.
  3. Pick a product / purity (999.9 to 9K).
  4. Choose a display currency; conversion is shown only when a verified rate is available.
  5. Use the spot reference and weight conversion, then confirm the actual shop quote separately.

How it is calculated

Reference value = weight (tael) × spot gold per tael × purity × target-currency rate
Spot gold per tael = XAU/USD ÷ 31.1035 × 37.429 × USD/HKD.

Data is retrieved through the same-origin Cloudflare Worker with timeout, limited retry and last-success fallback. The calculator adds no manufactured shop premium or buy-back discount and is not any shop's official quote.

Buying vs selling — which price?

  • Buying (you pay) = the shop's ask price, higher, including labour premium.
  • Selling (you get) = the shop's bid price. Obtain comparable quotes for the same time, unit and purity, then compare net proceeds after deductions.
Results are public-market spot reference values / estimates, not any shop's official quote or actual dealing price and not investment advice. Confirm actual terms with the shop.

How to use this gold calculator

This calculator converts a gold weight into an HKD reference value. It is simple: choose the weight unit (tael, mace, gram or troy ounce), enter the quantity, then pick the fineness (purity). The calculator estimates the metal reference using international spot × USD/HKD rate. Hong Kong uses the troy system: 1 tael ≈ 37.429 g, 1 tael = 10 mace, 1 troy ounce ≈ 31.1035 g. All this conversion logic is built in, so you don't have to do the maths.

Who is it for? Anyone who wants a rough idea before buying, wants to estimate old gold on hand, or wants to compare the value of pieces at different purities.

How to read the result? The output is a "metal" reference value — it excludes craftsmanship and brand premiums and is not any jeweller's actual buy or sell price. Buying adds a shop premium; selling deducts melt loss and commission. To estimate net sale proceeds, use the sell-gold net calculator. Every figure carries a source and update time and is a reference estimate, not an official quote.
