Frequently asked questions
Common questions about Hong Kong gold prices, units and trading.
How many grams is one tael of gold in Hong Kong?
Hong Kong jewellers use the troy tael (also called the si-maa tael): 1 tael = 37.429 grams, 1 tael = 10 mace, and 1 mace ≈ 3.7429 g. This is completely different from the mainland market catty (1 catty = 500 g, 1 tael = 50 g), so do not mix them up. Every tael figure on this site uses 37.429 g. If your gold is quoted in grams or troy ounces, use the calculator to switch units, where one troy ounce is about 31.1035 g.
Which price do I pay when buying — bid or ask?
When you buy, you pay the shop's ask, which is usually higher because it includes the metal, craftsmanship and a retail premium. When you sell, you receive the shop's bid, which is usually lower; the gap between them is the dealing spread. A simple way to remember: the shop's ask equals your buy price. This site does not publish any per-shop quotes — actual prices vary by shop, fineness, weight deduction and market conditions, so verify the full quote with the merchant.
Are these live dealing prices?
No. All gold, purity, world and crypto prices here are reference prices / estimates converted or derived from public sources (gold-api.com for metals, frankfurter.dev / open.er-api.com for FX, and CoinGecko/CoinPaprika for crypto), each shown with its source and latest successful update time. They may be delayed and are not any shop's, bank's or exchange's official or executable quote. Always confirm actual dealing prices with the merchant.
Are pure gold, 999 and 24K the same?
They are broadly similar but marked differently. 999.9 (four-nines) is about 99.99% pure, used for bars and pellets; 999 (fine gold) is 99%+, and 24K is the common name for high-purity gold — all three are high purity. By contrast, 22K (916) ≈ 91.6%, 18K (750) = 75% and 14K (585) = 58.5% are K-gold: lower gold content but harder, suited to settings. Higher purity means more gold and a buy-back closer to the pure-metal reference; this site converts by purity in real time.
